Unpacking the Vault: Hidden Narratives in the Bennington Art Collection
Curatorial Choices: Multiple Narratives in the Bennington Collections

Students over the academic year collaborated in curating an exhibit in Usdan Gallery highlighting the eccentric variety of works in the Bennington collection. The show unfolded in two phases: the fall class researched some 80 artworks from College holdings and identified connecting narrative themes for the exhibition debut in February 2018. The spring class researched 70 more artworks to expand narratives and identify new themes for a second opening in April 2018. Each group met in the gallery, allowing the exhibit to evolve around the students and making the classroom part of the show. Art collection manager Erin McKenny was an important asset, presenting new art objects each week for students to consider. Student research from College archives in Crossett Library and other sources formed content for an exhibition catalog. (Chart of narrative connections by Clark Glennon ’17)
