Counternarratives
Disrupting Media Bias (with Alexandra Bell)

Fall 2017 (1 credit)

Acclaimed media artist Alexandra Bell, known for her Counternarratives series of New York Times articles edited to reveal race and gender bias, taught workshop during an exhibition of her work at the College. Over two weekends, Bell guided students through her process of “radical re-editing.” Taking an article about the violent white-nationalist rally in Charlottesville, students created their own counter-narratives, identifying bias in uses of language and imagery and creating alternatives. Each student produced a personal “re-edit,” with mark-ups, marginalia, swapped-out photographs and rewritten text. Final projects were installed as a collective public artwork on campus.
